Family businesses are invited to an event to launch the Leicester region of Families in Business (FiB), the national organisation providing services, membership and support to family-run businesses. FiB also provides family firms with access to expert advisers who understand the specific dynamics and challenges faced by family businesses.
PKF Cooper Parry is FiB’s official accountancy and wealth partner in Leicester and the East Midlands and will be there on the evening to showcase their expertise. The free to attend informal event will take place at the Bentley Showroom in Syston on Monday 17 March between 6 and 8.30pm. Guest speaker is Charles Smith, deputy chief executive of Leicester-based family business Shoe Zone, which owns around 700 shoe stores across the UK. Other advisers involved in the event are Spearing Waite LLP, the Leicester legal partner to FiB. Kevin Harris (pictured) is partner, at PKF Cooper Parry and also an Ambassador for Families in Business having had 25 years’ experience of working with family firms. He said:
“In some ways family businesses are no different to others in that they have the same worries about things like profits and growth. “However, working with family can throw up many additional issues, mainly because the usual boundaries and processes that hold things together in aworkplace can become blurred. Understanding this from the outset enables us to provide the tailored support that family firms need – something which we as a business are committed to doing.”
Dani Saveker, founder and chief executive of Families in Business, added: “This event is all about bringing together anyone involved in a family run firm with other like-minded people who face the same issues. Family businesses face many highs and lows and it’s important to recognise how vital they are to the UK and indeed world economy. It will also be a good opportunity to listen to our guest speaker and hear other perspectives on being part of a family business.” Martin Smith, partner and head of corporate from Spearing Waite LLP, said: “As legal partner, we are delighted to be part of the FiB initiative. We are looking forward to being part of a community which is specifically designed to support all aspects of family businesses. “Family businesses, their success and their growth and development are a very important part of the Leicester and Leicestershire business community and we are pleased to be partnering with the initiative to provide legal assistance to them.” Families in Business was launched in 2012 as a national and local community of advisers, suppliers and professionals offering assistance for those involved in and around family businesses – as well as membership to family businesses and a specialised consultancy service to help with the challenges of succession, growth and other issues particular to them. The East Midlands is home to 237,000 family businesses, representing 77% of all businesses in the region and 8% nationally. Across the UK, family businesses account for two in every three private enterprises and employ over 9 million people; worldwide they make up over 80 percent of all enterprises.
